2014 Food Matters Skin Care Buying Guide

As promised in my last post, I'll give you a quick update on one of my favorite Annmarie Gianni Skin Care products. I absolutely LOVE the Herbal Facial Oil for normal and combination skin. I wanted to really test out the sample before buying a bottle, but now I've finished the tiny sample and I'm anxiously waiting for more! The oil is hydrating, my makeup looks better than ever, I don't need primer at all, and my skin feels amazing. I love it!

Definitely check out the 2014 Food Matters Skin Care Buying Guide. Guess what rated number one for best au naturel skin care companies? Annmarie Gianni Skin Care. :)

Skin Care Products

In a recent blog post, I mentioned my new love of raw, organic, unrefined coconut oil and my soon-to-be new love of raw, organic, unrefined shea butter (I was waiting to receive it in the mail). Well, I can tell you I absolutely love mixing coconut oil and shea butter for an amazing body moisturizer. Not only am I using a safe product on my skin, but I'm saving so much money compared to the coconut body butter I was using. A little goes a long way and I'm very happy with the results.

Where I've changed my mind is using coconut oil on my face. Unlike on my body, the coconut oil is just too much for my delicate face. I started getting clogged pores and even dry spots! Switching to my previous Alba Botanica moisturizer for just a day cleared up the issues. With that said, I did some more research on coconut oil and alternative pure organic products for my face.

It turns out many people experienced the same as me. Coconut oil was great at first, but it's no good long term. Even my two favorite authors, Kris Carr and Kimberly Snyder, recommend using coconut oil on the body, but not the face. Kris Carr thoroughly recommends Annmarie Gianni Skin Care. She has been using Annmarie Gianni's products on her face for several years and she explains here that although many of the products are made with oils, the products don't cause breakouts or clogged pores. I ordered a sample kit (and received a $10 off coupon for next time) and I started using the products today. I'm hoping for amazing results. I think I'll be very pleased, so stay tuned for a review in the next few weeks.

Remember, the skin is your largest organ. Anything you put on your skin will be absorbed into the body.

Cosmetics Update

I want to write a quick update on the foundation I purchased and told you about yesterday. It turns out I didn't like Dr. Hauschka's Translucent Makeup foundation on me at all. The foundation really didn't cover any of the natural redness I have on my face. I knew it would be a lighter cover due to its "translucent" factor, but I didn't quite realize how light that would be! Luckily, I was told I could return the makeup if I really didn't like it. Rather than drive back to Novato, I stopped by the Santa Rosa Whole Foods and they were more than helpful and returned the item for me.

I do want to mention that the Gabriel Cosmetics mascara and lip gloss that I purchased yesterday are both great and I won't be returning them!

Since I'm very low on my current (flammable!) foundation, I headed to Ulta to try the popular vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free cosmetic line, Tarte. The Amazonian Clay 12-hour full coverage foundation in fair beige is perfect for me and I feel much better about the products I'm using. I probably stood in the Tarte section for about 30 minutes to be absolutely certain the color was an exact match and that it would cover my redness. If I'm at all unhappy with the product within the next 60 days, Ulta will return the item.

I also found a really great "Seashell Pink" cream eyeshadow by Tarte. I've never used a cream eyeshadow, but this particular one looks and feels like a regular pressed eyeshadow when it's on. I also received a free gift which includes a sample of the Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-hour Primer and the Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder.

I was also eyeing the "Shades of Clay" Bambeautiful Amazonian Clay Eye Shadow Palette (that's a mouthful!), but I'll wait on that for now. I'm very happy with my purchases and I'm so glad I did my research! I tried everything again when I got home and all the products are great. I also have some flexibility because both Ulta and Sephora sell this popular brand. Oh, and I noticed Tarte is having some great sales on their website!

Product Reviews

Mrs. Meyer's lemon dish soap works well and I know I'm making a better choice by using it!

After trying a few different brands that just didn't do the job, I finally found Renew and Hydrate Eye Cream by Bare Minerals and Aloe and Green Tea Oil-Free Moisturizer by Alba. The moisturizer really absorbs into my skin and leaves my face feeling hydrated without leaving a shine.

Product Reviews

I've had some time to try a few vegan, cruelty-free products, so I thought now would be a great time to share my thoughts. :)

Pureology Super Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner
  • My hair has looked great since using Pureology
  • A bit pricey, but a little goes a long way
  • Perfume fragrance is a bit strong, but it's worth it to have nice hair :) The other Pureology shampoos and conditioners may have better scents. I'll be sure to try them!
  • Approx. $27.00 per bottle

Pureology Precious Oil
  • Love it!
  • I always use one pump of the oil on the ends of my hair after I shower
  • Approx. $12.00

Giovanni Smooth as Silk Shampoo and Conditioner
  • I've tried it once so far and I love the citrus fragrance
  • Seemed a bit drying, so be sure to use a leave-in conditioner afterward
  • Approx. $6-8 per bottle

Palmer's Cocoa Butter
  • I've been using Palmer's Cocoa Butter for years now, so I'm glad to know it's a vegan, cruelty-free product!

Alba Botanica Hawaiian Facial Scrub
  • Love it!
  • Smells great!
  • Keeps my face smooth and clear!
  • $10.00 - $13.00

Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Liquid Hand Soap - Lavender
  • Not a fan of the lavender scent! My natural inclination was to grab the lemon, but I chose the lavender soap for my bathroom. Lesson learned. I'll be sure to smell all the scents while in the store and before purchasing the soap next time!
  • The soap itself works great
  • Approx. $3.99 per bottle

Tom's Relaxing Bar Soap
  • Very cleansing
  • Smells like real lavender
  • I'm not sure why I purchased another lavender product! I typically like less fragrance, so I think Tom's Daily Moisture with Olive Oil and Vitamin E will be better for me next time.
  • I only tried the relaxing bar soap at the bathroom sink as I'm still getting through the rest of my Dove bar soap I had before going vegan (Dove is not vegan and is not cruelty-free according to PETA). I may post an update after really testing Tom's soap!
  • Runs at about $2.99 per bar
